Stylist Female Model

It is your typical photo shoot, a creative team of makeup artists, hairstylists, lighting and camera crew work meticulously, curling every lock and ironing every wrinkle, just to get the best shot.
The model waits patiently as the stylist deliberates with the make-up artist; the entire crew is working hard to create a flawless look for the model whose image is going to be plastered all over the glossy pages of fashion editorials and magazines. It's teamwork, it's tedious, it's laborious, it's fashion.
This time however, the roles have been reversed and the camera is trained on Omoyemi Akerele, the Fashion Editor at True Love Magazine. As a fashion professional, she is more accustomed to being behind the scenes.
Her job is to map the fashion vision and take it from concept to reality, synergistically working together with her team to bring fashion to life in front of the camera.
In every industry there are a school of pioneers that champion the cause, trudging through unchartered territory to push the collective agenda, often encountering obstacles, but ultimately surmounting them, to achieve recognition and success.
In the school of Nigeria fashion stylists and professionals, Omoyemi Akerele is undoubtedly a pioneer. She has legitimized the styling profession in Nigeria, changing the way we think about the varying careers within the fashion industry.
As the first on the scene, as close to a veteran as one can get in the profession, she has established herself and built up an impressive resume and body of work in the process.
On dreaming big"If you live it, breathe it, dream it, you can do it." This is the attitude Omoyemi had to foster at the start of her career while trying to gain headway in the new waters of the Nigerian fashion industry. She found her calling by chance; she was originally a lawyer.
After receiving a Bachelor's of Law at the University of Lagos and accepting a call to bar in 2001, she set herself on the path of legal briefings, litigation and deliberation as a lawyer at the firm of Olaniwun Ajayi & Co. in Lagos. While practicing she came to terms with the fact that she lacked a certain passion for law.
"I realized I was bored at work and wasn't giving it 100%, I was distracted, and decided to resign. I knew whatever I ended up doing had to give me satisfaction and joy. So I did some inner searching to find out what it was about clothes and the fashion industry that intrigued me."
And thus her journey commenced. She went to London and took training courses at renowned image consultancy center Aston Hayes, and under the tutelage of Jennifer Aston, studied the theories of female and male body style analyses, paradigms of color and texture, personal style consultation, wardrobe management and corporate shopping.
"Coming back from my designing courses I knew the first thing I needed was to get my voice out there but there weren't many fashion magazines and the magazines being produced didn't have fashion pages."
Believing in a vision of bringing Nigerian fashion publications to life by incorporating fashion pages similar to those in international magazines, she decided to shop her idea around.
Eventually, she began contributing for Genevieve and Every Woman magazines, all the while building up a network of friends and business associates within the fashion industry.
But her lucky break came in January 2005, when a chance meeting with Bola Atta, editor True Love Magazine editor catapulted her into a new chapter in her career. She joined the True Love team as a fashion stylist. Over the years, she rose to her current position as Fashion Editor of the magazine.
Since the career change, Omoyemi has worked tirelessly to build an ironclad resume, teaming with the greatest minds in the Nigerian fashion industry - heavy hitting fashion designers, makeup artists, photographers and hair-stylists.
Her resume reads like a who's who of the fashion industry; she is the kind of woman whose business rolodex includes the likes of magazine editors, advertising executive, and textile industry managers; her reach is far.
She has worked in various capacities at several notable fashion shows, including This Day Africa Rising (2008); United Nations Catwalk the World Fashion Show with Deola Sagoe (2007) and the British Airways 70th Anniversary Fashion Show with Tiffany Amber (2007).
She's versatile too, and has done major work in the advertising realm, supervising the artistic direction on various campaigns.
She has also worked behind the scenes on the Nigerian reality show circuit, dressing our favorite characters on programs like Temptation Nigeria, Big Brother Nigeria, Deal or No Deal Nigeria, Idols West Africa and the upcoming West Africa's Next Top Model.

Supermodel Linda Evangelista

Born May 10, 1965 in St. Catharine’s, Ontario. Linda always had an interest in becoming a famous model and worked hard to get to where she is today. At the young age of only 13, she had won the 1978 “Miss Teen Niagara” and was discovered by a scout from Elite Model Management. By age 13, Linda had signed to a Toronto modelling company and at age 16 signed with Elite Modelling in New York. Over the years Linda has been regarded as one of the few true supermodels that changed the face of fashion in the late 1980`s and early 90`s. After all between 1988 to 1996 she can be credited to, starting about 11 different hair styles that where very popular. In addition, Linda was the founder of the supermodel union along with three other supermodels, which brought new standards and rules making better working conditions and pay for the models. In her modelling career to date Linda have been in over 63 various advertisements, been on the cover of 68 magazines and easily been in over 15 fashion shows through out the years. For all of her accomplishments and the changes she made in the modelling industry, Linda Evangelista will always be in my mind one of “Canada’s Top Models”.

Supermodel Jessica Stam

The modelling and fashion industry is a multi-million dollar business, which attracts the prettiest of women (as well as men) from all around the world. Many fashion and supermodels have made millions as well as made their mark on the industry. Fashion shows and the models that work the shows bring in the elite crowds and make the designers millions of dollars every year in hopes to be the next top supermodel. This got me thinking the other day on how many of these famous or successful female models came from Canada. Therefore, I gathered only 10 of what I thought to be either the most famous or successful models from Canada and brought them together here.

Supermodel Jessica
Jessica Stam who was born April 23, 1986 in Kincardine, Ontario. Growing up on a farm as a teen, the thought of being a model never actually crossed the mind of Stam but instead she had hopes of becoming a dentist. Well destiny had other plans for her, as she would find out. One day the family was on their way back from a day trip to Canada’s Wonderland, when they stopped at a Tim Horton’s for a bathroom break. This is where Stam was discovered standing in line by modelling scout “Michele Miller” of International Model Management in Barrie, Ontario. After that photographer, “Steven Meisel” used the 16 year old in every one of his ad campaigns of his. Stam then went on to win the Los Angeles Model Look Search in 2002. Through out her 7-year career she has already worked for such agencies as International Model Management, IMG “London/Milan/NY/Paris”, My Model Management, Giovanni Model Management, Bravo Models, View Management and Why Not Model Agency. Stam has been in over 30 advertisements altogether, on 22 magazine covers and in over 15 fashion shows. She has accomplished an astonishing amount in such a short period and this to me makes Jessica Stam another one of Canada’s top models. There are many more Canadian female supermodels that have accomplished the same as these 10 girls if not more but to me these are the 10 supermodels in my mind that are Canada’s Top Models.

Modelling Tips

Do you often find yourself waiting, camera in hand, while your model struggles to get the pose right for the shot? For the professional photographer posing a human model, the working relationship is something like that between film director and actor. Yet photographers don't get training in the human side of posing a model. Here's a little list of tips and tricks for getting your subject to perform well for you.
Flatter Them Actors and models get into this line of work because they love the attention, after all, so work with that. Fuss over them about how great they look today, what a nice shot you're taking of them, how they're Vanity Fair material, and so on. Their confidence will reflect in the kind of performance they give you, especially in sensual photographic subjects.
Play With Them What? Yes, really! For getting a spontaneous, cheerful shot, you might want to keep the camera put away first and challenge them to a one-on-one game of catch or a pillow fight or something else childish and simple. What on Earth for? For inspiring a mindset of playfulness in the model, which will translate into sparkling eyes, impish grins, and sweeping body movements during the shoot. Lacking that, even some small talk where you can tell a joke or otherwise lighten the mood before you shoot helps.
Coach Them Especially with an amateur model, they might not know all the tricks of posing. Tell them to keep stomach in, shoulders back, back straight, breathe from the lungs and not the abdomen, not to hold their breath, look off to the side, keep their weight on one ofr the other leg, and so on. And of course, smile, smile, smile!
Calm Children In working with child models, you have the opposite problem from adults - getting them settled and focused on the job. You might try leading them in some meditation exercise! Just play "Zen master", setting an example while having them sit still, breathe deeply, and hum for a few minutes. This actually works to help them center and focus, without being distracted.
